The Story
I was just five years old when, one autumn afternoon, Grandfather Manfredi came in his bright red Fiat 1100 to take me for a ride.
I was looking forward to toys, candy and fun but, that day, the car turned onto a winding road that climbed up into the mountains. After a while, we arrived at a farm nestled in the countryside of Palermo. There was a bustle of carts and tractors loaded with green gems: olives.

The Origins
October in Sicily is a magical month, when the light and the clear air intensify all of nature’s colours. It was those very colours and that extraordinary light that stimulated my senses, allowing me to be carried away by that intense autumn smell of freshly picked olives, entering my lungs and making its way into my blood.
Those autumn walks with my grandfather grew into our custom, and I came to feel at home in that world populated by men with gnarled hands and worn-out clothes. I liked being with the farmers, looking into their clear, honest eyes, listening to conversations which were incomprehensible to me but had the ring of timeless music. The next summer, when school was over, I spent a month working at the olive mill. I cleaned, manned the bottling machine, made deliveries and was interrogated by grandfather about the oil warehouse. I was in for trouble if I gave the wrong answer!
The summers spent at the oil mill became a tradition, and deep down I already knew that my love for this work would bear fruit in time to come.

Design
At the end of the 19th century, my great-grandfather Lorenzo had purchased the beautiful estate of San Lorenzo ai Colli. There, he started a prosperous farm devoted primarily to the cultivation of the finest olives, namely the three typical Sicilian cultivars: the delicate Biancolilla, the savoury Nocellara, and the robust Cerasuola. Blending these varieties together creates a smooth, aromatic oil with the unmistakeable taste of October’s first pressings: an affectionate tribute to the work of my ancestors. I then imagined a finely decorated, elegant and original bottle, one that would send my mind travelling back to the far-off time when my grandfather used the first glass bottles. To create the label for it, I took inspiration from the graceful Art Nouveau decorative motifs that were so fashionable at that time. Finally, there was just one thing left to do: to come up with a simple, striking name. And so the Italian word frantoio — the oil press which forms the beating heart of the mill — was given a feminine twist to become the made-up word Frantoia. A tribute to womanhood, because the earth, like all mothers, is a woman. A tribute to womanhood, because the earth, like all mothers, is a woman.
